Citizenship and Leadership Experience

Citizenship and Leadership Experience

This multiday experience trip for rising seniors will visit and explore Washington DC to see and learn about the history of the United States, but also be exposed to and learn about leadership within the country.

The Student Leadership Program is hosted in partnership between the Gulfstream, Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools and businesses and non-profit organizations in Chatham County. After Discovery Learning Experiences, three years of Power Skills will allow you to Discover Your Future.

SLP Student Commitment

The Student Leadership Program (SLP) is a partnership between Gulfstream and Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools aimed to expose students to career opportunities in Chatham County and develop student’s personal leadership and work-ready skills.  Being selected to be in SLP is an honor and privilege.  Students admitted to the program will remain in the program throughout their sophomore, junior and senior year of high school as long as they meet the SLP Commitment Requirements.  Failure to meet these requirements may result in removal from the program.  Students in the program must commit to the following:

Being present is critical for students to be engaged and learn through the experiences offered in SLP.  Students in the program can miss no more than two events per year.  If a student misses more than two events in a year, they will be dismissed from the program.

Since SLP takes place during the school day, it is important for SLP students to maintain good grades since they will miss instruction time to attend SLP.  Students who have a grade in any class that is lower than a C for more than two nine-week periods will be dismissed from the program.

SLP is a leadership program to promote and demonstrate positive leadership actions.  As a member of SLP, students should abide by the school code of conduct.  If the student violates any portion of the code of conduct, it will be up to their principal whether they can continue in SLP.

At all SLP events, being engaged and participating is important to personal growth.  At SLP students are expected to be respectful to others in paying attention during tours, workshops and assemblies, not using their cellphone and/or earbuds and headphones.

Community service is a major part of leadership and understanding your community. Students must participate in at least one SLP Serves to complete and graduate from the program.

The learning that takes place in SLP is not limited to the sessions that take place during the school year.  Students are required to participate in at least one of the Summer Experience Trips during their time in the program but are not limited to only participating in one.  They will be required to attend the trip with their class.
